Fiction Writing

After half-watching a few NCAA basketball games this weekend, I fell in love with one of the traditions. At the end of the game, players of the winning team took turns climbing a ladder to claim a piece of the net.

As an avid college football fan, I find the calm, rational basketball approach to be very different from the rioting fans climbing on top of the uprights to bring them down.

As I watched this orchestrated and “blessed” net cutting ceremony, I started thinking about how close I am to a victory in my own life and what I am going to do when I achieve it. At this writing I am 67,000 words into the rough draft of an 80,000ish word novel. But what will I do when I finish it?

Like the net cutting ceremony, I need this to be a team effort.

Through another’s eyes

September 26, 2011

I just finished another chapter in my first chick-lit novel, Whine and Wine. It seems like each time I finish a chapter, I feel myself more and more a part of the ladies in the story. Sylvia, for example, is a pastor’s wife with a sordid past who is beginning to see that her husband [...]

Writer’s Life

July 28, 2011

The more I make writing part of my daily priority list, the more I find my characters talking to me. Whether it is nonfiction and I start remembering something my kids did that was worth writing a quick story about, or if it is fiction and the characters start building their own journey’s and life [...]

The power of fiction

July 14, 2011

I have written nonfiction most of my life. My journalism background landed me in roles within reporting, and then as a freelancer I got into things like personal essays, blogs, feature articles, and reviews. I am just now sinking my teeth into fiction writing and, I must admit, it is a bit of a power [...]
